The First Cut: How to Use a Scroll Saw

1. Gear up. Anytime you are in a workshop, you should take the proper safety precautions. First, make sure you're not wearing clothing that is baggy or ill-fitting. Tie up your hair if possible or put it under a hat. Put on safety goggles that cover your entire eye area (glasses don't count). If you have respiratory issues, consider wearing a dust mask. If you will be using the saw continuously for more than 10 minutes, wear hearing protection.

2. Take a look. You should always inspect your scroll saw in bright light before starting it. You will want to look for loose screws, stray bits of wood and anything else that seems out of the ordinary. While you're down there, double-check that you have the right blade installed. A spiral blade, which is a twisted blade, will give you 360 degree-control in moving your project. Reverse blades reduce splinters and scroll blades are right for thicker pieces of wood.

3. Get your project. If you haven't already, make sure your wood project is ready to be cut. Double-check all of the lines on the project to make sure that they are in the right place. I usually use pencil for my lines in case I need to change them. Your project should be on a much larger piece of wood than the finished product will be, especially at the beginning when you're still learning how the machine works. Place your project under the workpiece guard, ensuring that it fits snugly.

4. Switch it on. Once you're ready for your scroll saw, turn it on. If it sounds like it's working normally and the blade does not snap, you may proceed. If this isn't your machine, make a test cut on another piece of wood to get the feel for it. Use a higher speed for hardwoods and a slower speed for softwoods.

5. Start cutting. Using gentle pressure and keeping your fingers as far away from the blade as possible, begin slowly guiding your project against the blade. Working slowly and with a gentle pressure is key to your project's success and to keeping your scroll saw's blade intact. At first, you might want to make several large cuts with breaks before attempting smaller cuts.

6. Turn it off. Once you're done with your project or a section of it, immediately turn off the machine. Keeping the machine on could lead to shop accidents.

7. Change the blade. Scroll saws require regular blade changes. You should cede to the manufacturer requirements of your machine while you are a beginner. The blades tend to be held in place by quick-release clamps and a tension mechanism. Do not attempt to change a blade by yourself for the first time. Ask an experienced woodworker to show you how to change the blade and ensure that it is held in place properly. Then have that person supervise you while you change a blade.

8. If you're cutting brass, not wood, use a backer board. Brass is very sharp and full of burrs when cut. If you don't use the board, your project will scratch your table.

9. Cover up mistakes. Did you make a wrong cut somewhere? You might be able to revive your project. If you can, redraw the project slightly smaller the originally intended. If you were working on a reduction block and accidentally cut something out too early, retrace your drawing onto some wood, cut out the item against and put it back on the original item so you can level it out.

10. File and filings. Don't forget to use a file or sandpaper to smooth out the edges of your project. You also should immediately clean up any leftover sawdust from your project, as it can be dangerous if it gets into the air.

Cutting Cabinet Melamine Board Without Chipping It

There are special techniques that we use in the cabinet-fabricating industry for cutting Melamine board so that it does not chip. Without the correct blades or tools, chipping will occur. Melamine board is used for many different cabinet parts-including doors, shelves and drawers. Some shops use it for everything except the toe kick areas.

If you are cutting on a table saw, there are two options you have for cutting the board with minimal chipping. You will not be able to yield perfectly clean, chip-free surfaces on both sides of the board unless you have a double-bladed table saw. They generally cost over fifteen-thousand dollars. If you are just undertaking a "do it yourself" project, you may have a few small chips to contend with.

Sharp Blades
The first method requires that you have a newly-sharpened saw blade in your machine. You'll want to adjust your blade so that it only cuts through the top of the board about one-eighth to one- quarter of an inch. Practice on a few pieces of Melamine before working with the actual cabinet-making materials. Adjust the height of the blade until you are getting a clean cut on both sides of the board. You should push your material slowly through the cutter; the slower you cut, the fewer chips you will have.

Reverse-Rake Blade
This is a special table saw cutter that is designed for making clean cuts on both sides of Melamine board. This is not a cheap item to add to your collection of tools. So if you are going to only use it once, you may consider doing something else.

Using Masking Tape (not recommended)
You can mark exactly where the blade will be cutting the cabinet Melamine board and then place a strip of masking tape over the area on the side of the board that would normally be chipping during the cut. This usually works fairy well. The biggest drawback to using any tape is that the stickiness can create difficulty when making your cuts. Be very careful if you decide to try this method- it is not very safe.

Other methods of making clean cuts on Melamine board include using table saws that have two blades and then cutting two boards at one time.

Special saws that have two blades are very expensive. Most mid-to-large sized kitchen and bathroom cabinet fabricators have these type saws. If you only need a few pieces of Melamine cut cleanly on both sides, you should consider going to a large cabinet shop in your area and having them cut the materials for you.

Cutting two Melamine boards at once will only give you one board that will not be chipped on both sides. One of the boards will chip on one side.

Depending upon the color of the material you are working with, you may be able to cover over the chips with some type of filler. We use white "Seam Fill" on all of our white Melamine boards that get small chips in them. This liquid material was designed for repairing seams in Formica plastic laminate. Seam Fill is an excellent choice for filling in chipped areas on Melamine.

There are several ways of hiding the chips too. If you are cutting shelves, you can place the chips either on the upwards or downwards sides so they cannot be seen. If you are building drawers out of the Melamine, you can make sure that you place the clean cut side on the inside of the drawers. If you are using the material for cupboard doors, you should try to get the cleanest cut as possible on both sides.

Boat Prop Balancing Procedure

The Boat propeller combines many important functions in a boat. It combines the functions of transmission, wheels and tires when equated with a car. Boat prop balancing is very important to extend the life of the propeller and the engine and to cut down the noise of the engine.

To balance a boat prop, one needs leather gloves, goggles, a respirator, modeling clay, a good boat propeller balancer, metal file, a green carbide wheel, fine sandpaper or sanding drum, 320 grit sandpaper, block of wood, stroboscope, oiled sandpaper and propeller polishing compound.

The first step in boat prop balancing is to protect oneself before starting the process. Gloves, goggles and a respirator should be worn.

The second step is to correct the dimensional balance of the propeller. This is done by making the blades of the propellers the same size. To do this the blades should be pressed into modeling clay to get a mold of the exact size. Using a metal file or a carbide wheel all the blades should be filed to fit the mold. After the correct size is achieved, the edge should be made smooth using a sanding drum or sandpaper. A smooth angle should lead to the trail edge of the blade.

The next step in boat prop balancing is to achieve static balancing of the propeller. For accurate results, a propeller balancer should be used. Static balancing is making sure that all the blades are of the same weight. If one blade is thicker than the other, thickness should be removed by using a hard block of wood and 320 grit sandpaper. The thickness of the blade from the top to bottom should also be the same. Placing blades side by side on the prop balancer will give an indication as to which blade is thicker. The thicker blade will come down the side of the balance.

The spin balance should be corrected as a next step. The prop should be placed on the balance with a stroboscope. The prop should be spun to see if there are any irregularities in the spinning cycle. Heavier blades will be on the outer side of the wobble and this will indicate that the spinning is not balanced. Reducing the weight of the blade to match the others using oiled sandpaper till it is smooth will correct the spinning balance of a prop. Repeat the spinning till there is no wobble and the prop spins correctly in a circle.

The last step in boat prop balancing is to polish the prop. The prop should be polished to a high shine using a good wax based polishing compound. This will increase its water resistance and will remove any grit or metal bits left by the process of filing and sanding. They also have a smoother surface after a coat or two of polish when they grip the water.

Boat prop balancing should be periodically performed to improve performance and for reducing the wear and tear of the equipment. A well balanced boat prop is absolutely essential for racing or speed boating.

History of RollerBlades

Roller blades, roller skates or inline skates all refer to a skate. History of roller blade is somewhat long and winding. While people often use the term roller blade for the boot with wheels underneath, it may help to know that roller blade is actually a trade name and not the boot with wheel that you usually enjoy. Rollerblade, Inc. is the manufacturer of many modern roller skates.

Historical timelines of roller blades

1700s

The history of roller blades or roller skates, started in the early 1700s when a London stage performer used roller skates in a performance. This is the first sighting of a roller blade. The concept came from Holland where Dutchmen would nail wooden spools to strips of wood and attaching them to their shoes. They will use their skeelers to slide through frozen canals.

1760

Joseph Merlin, a London instrument maker and inventor wants to impress some people to promote his museum. He attended a masquerade party using metal-wheeled boots. However, to make his entrance engaging, he played his violin as he rolls his skates. Unfortunately, he crashed into a solid mirror wall.

1818

In this year, the premier German Ballet group known as Der maler oder dei Wintervergn or The Artist or Winter Pleasures used roller skates in one of their production numbers. The intention was actually to perform ice skating, however since during this time it is yet impossible to produce ice on a stage, rollers skates are a better alternative.

1819

Monsieur Petibledin received the first patent for a roller skate in France. His roller skates are made of wood sole that is attached at the bottom of a boot. There are two to four rollers made of either copper, wood or ivory forming a straight line under the wood sole.

1823

Another patent was issued for Rolito. Rolito is a shoe or boot with five lined wheels at the bottom. This is the first design that resembles our roller skates of today, however, Rolito cannot follow curved path as the skates of today can.

1863

The birth of quad skates entered the history of roller blades or roller skates. An American inventory names James Plimpton designed a usable pair of skates. His skates had two parallel sets of wheels: one pair under the heel and the other pair under the toes. Plimptons design was the first useable pair of skates; it is able to navigate curves unlike earlier models.

1902

Seven thousand people attended the opening of a skating rink in a Chicago Coliseum. This started series of skating rinks opening in the United States.

1970s-1980s

The disco era gave skating another boost in popularity where many Hollywood movies included roller skating in their theme. Over 4,000 roller discos are also seen operating in and around the United States.

1979

This marks the birth of the name roller blades. Hockey players and brothers Scott and Brennan Olson redesigned an old skates as a tool to practice hockey. They used modern materials in improving the design. They also establish Rollerblade, Inc .. The modern design of roller skates made the most useful and modern design possible for this sliding tool. Since, then roller skates are already known to people as roller blades.

Other improvements and variations are developed to roller blades but the history started with the establishment of Rollerblade, Inc.

Different Types of Boat Propellers

A boat propeller is a mechanical device that propels or pushes the boat through the water. It consists of revolving shafts, which are typically powered by boat motors, and blades, which are responsible for biting or gripping into the water. Boat props can be categorized according to the style and amount of blades they used, their pitch measurement and diameter, as well as the type of materials they’re made from.

Three-Blade Propeller

A three-blade propeller is the most common type of propeller, and it is also usually the fastest (the exception being that on other high performance boats, a four-blade propeller allows for greater speeds). The propeller’s three, curved blades spiral around a central device called a hole shot, which connects the propeller to the boat’s engine. The curves help improve the propeller’s traction, or bite in the water.

Four-Blade Propeller

A four-blade propeller allows a boat to stay on plane while the engine runs at low levels of rotations per minute (RPMs). This means that this type of propeller is better than its three-bladed counterpart at keeping a steady or even cruising speed. This is good both for trolling, a type of fishing in which you drag baits/lures behind a steady-moving boat. Also, a four-bladed propeller can be adjusted or trimmed to increase the transom height, which helps increase the speed of the boat.

Cupped Blade

A cupped blade can be integrated into four-blade and three-blade propeller designs. This type of blade has curved lips, which allow for better grip or bite in the water (while a blade on a three-blade propeller is already curved throughout, “cupped” specifically refers to curved outer edges). When the propeller is positioned so that it operates close to the surface of the water, a cupped blade will help increase the overall speed of a boat.

Pitch and Diameter

Propellers are also classified according to their pitches and diameters. The pitch is the theoretical distance that a boat will be able to travel per propeller rotation, while the diameter is the distance across the circular device that the blades are typically attached to. Nevertheless, while increasing the propeller’s pitch will increase the boat’s top-end or overall speed, you will decrease or lose the acceleration.

Materials

Boat propellers are usually made from one of two materials: stainless steel or aluminum. While the more-popular aluminum propeller is less expensive, it is also more prone to damage. A stainless steel propeller is more durable and much stronger than its aluminum counterpart, and can also be heat-treated for increased protection from dings and scratches.

The Bleach Sword Series – Senbonzakura & Master Kuchiki Byakuya

Byakuya is a master of bleach swords, capable of flawless precision and extremely lethal attacks without having to use much effort. He is very well-known for his ability of Flash steps.

He was taught this skill by the “Goddess of Flash steps” Yoruichi Shihoin, and his abilities are almost on par with hers, just slightly below her. Among the shinigamis of the Soul Society however, he is the master. His bleach sword Senbonzakura is also called Thousand Cherry Blossoms and is a very powerful katana, with a basic cross guard with an open frame, much like a four-pane window.

In its Shikai form, Senbonzakura’s blade separates into a thousand blades, turning into very tiny blade fragments that will fly away within the hilt, leaving just the handle to hold. The fragmenting of the sword blades can be negated just before it bursts, as seen when when Yoruichi Shihoin wraps the blade in cloth during the course of Byakuya’s brief battle with Ichigo. Nevertheless, if the blade dispersion completes, then Senbonzakura will be nearly unstoppable. When dispersing the blades reflect the light in such a way that they seem to appear as cherry blossom flower petals, however they are not soft and sweet, but quite deadly.

When he swings Senbonzakura’s hilt, Byakuya can control the blade parts at will, allowing him to shred his enemies at a distance and breakdown virtually any form of defense. Its Bankai “Senbonzakura Kageyoshi” form is basically a considerably greater version of Senbonzakura’s Shikai. In order to activate the cycle of attack, Kuchiki Byakuya drops his sword straight down. The sword sinks down into the earth, as easily as dipping one’s hand into a pool of water. Power ripples expand out from the blade, turning the surrounding immediately surrounding area to dark, and inside of seconds, two rows of the thousand great blades shoot out from the soil. Thousands of individual swords fly and pierce the opponents. Enemies are usually unaware of what is about to him them, and even if they are they cannot track the movements of the individual blades or dodge them.

The quantity of blades is more than sufficient so for Byakuya to use them for defense as well as offense at the exact same time. He generally gathers them into large masses, used to pierce enemies almost instantaneously. Since Senbonzakura moves through the air like the torrents of a tidal wave, it can be likened to cherry blossoms flowing along using the wind. Kuchiki’s can defend himself by covering himself with these killer tiny blades, and form a shield system.

In contrast to his Shikai, the Bankai is solely mentally manipulated. Although Byakuya can control the blades of his bleach sword with his thoughts alone, using his hands permits him to accomplish control even more efficiently, thus producing rates of speed and control that are three times greater than with just his mind alone. As with his Shikai, the assault is mainly triggered using the word Scatter.
